Legend of the wine

Top quality white wine of protected geographical origin, shrouded in a mystical veil of stories about Count Rohonci, whose exciting life led to a special variety from Algeria, Muscat Krokan, coming to the Pearl Island on the Tisza.
History says that Count Gedeon Rohonci lived in the second half of the 19th century in Hungary (on the territory of today’s Serbia) and was a prominent politician of that time. According to tradition, we know that he was known as a lover of women, drinks, horses and gambling.

The story of the wine “GROF”  (“COUNT”) starts from a poker game that Count Rohonci played with Count Arpad Miklos. In the heat of the game, Rohonci bet that they would have a better variety and better wine in his vineyard. He told the opponent he would give him two of his best black horses if he didn’t fulfil the promise. That was the time when the word had weight, so Rohonci headed to North Africa and brought Muscat Krokan, a variety of white, sweet and extremely fragrant grapes. Fertile alluvial land of the old Tisza riverbed, with long sunny periods, proved to be an ideal place for the Algerian vine, and already in the following years, unusual wine was squeezed in the barrels of Count Rohonci. The Count was left with black horses, and the wine was made from grapes that thrive only in the place where this land owner first planted them – on the Pearl Island near Novi Bečej.

Legend also says that Count Rohonci donated this quality wine throughout Europe to counts and royal courts. Thus, Muscat Krokan wine was found at the Habsburg court and was then consumed for almost 6 decades. Later, it was an extremely expensive wine, a favourite drink of politicians of old Yugoslavia, but also of the whole world. This wine with a fascinating history was gladly drunk by Tito, De Gaulle, Stalin and many others.
